There is so much being written these days about keeping our brains healthy as we age, with a pile of new products on the market promising to do just that! But you know that the answer might be a lot simpler and cost a heck of a lot less!
Lawrence C. Katz, a former psychologist and brain fitness pioneer at Duke University invented the idea of Neurobics, a concept that demonstrates how challenging your mind in everyday ways - such as playing Scrabble, chess or Sudoku can have an anti-aging effect. Wow! What a concept... play keeps us young!
It is becoming more and more clear that we adults need to take action to keep our minds fresh as we move into our senior years. But think how easy it would all be if we didn't need to do anything different. What I mean is... what if we had play incorporated into our lives from early childhood, and then carried that through into our adult lives. Play can help on a variety of levels that are all critical to happiness including providing opportunities for socialization, laughter as well as mental stimulation. Look at how many of our seniors seem to be missing those key elements in their lives.
Fixing a problem is always harder than taking preventative steps early on! So just like your daily dose of Vitamin C, why not take a dose of something a lot more fun? Regardless of your age, you are never too old to play! Start good habits now and don't ever let them go.
